On Aug. 27, the Farmers Market honored the memory of Herman Emil Comfort, who many may remember as “The Singing Farmer.”
A World War II veteran and retired machinist, Herman was a fixture at the Market since 1986. With his warm smile and endless array of songs, Herman provided sweet corn and sweet smiles to the many Market shoppers he met over the years. Herman continued to work at the Market even after turning 100 years old last year, until he sadly passed away on Christmas Eve of 2023.
We are grateful to Herman’s family for their gift of a generous donation to the West Allis Farmers Market to establish a plaque in his honor as well as support other Market improvements in his memory. We were so pleased to welcome them today as we dedicated the plaque and ensured Herman will be remembered at the Market for a long time to come. The family also kindly shared Herman’s favorite birthday treat – peanut butter cups – with guests this morning, on what would have been Herman’s 101st birthday. Join us in raising a peanut butter cup to Herman and the joy he brought to everyone at the Market for so many years!
